Backcountry in the Narvik mountains
Teleskiing is often at it´s best when you´ve struggled your way to the top of a high mountain, and have endless areas of untouched powder in front of you!
Narvik offers great surroundings for backcountry skiing. After a few minutes walk from the center of town with the skis on your shoulder, you can actually ascend several tops rising from sea level to almost 1300 meters. If you have access to a car, you have an almost infinite amount of tops within reach. These pictures shows just a few of the trips we´ve done in this area.
Gagnesaksla is a spectacular coloir running from 1200 meter and straight into salt water! Because of the big wall you´re skiing beside, you get a tremendous feeling of altidtude, and those who don´t like airy places should stay away! Spanstind, Leigas and Aarsteinhornet are mountains located about half an hour of driving north of Narvik. Moerkhoalla offers about 1000 height meters of tremendous off-pist, just 20 minutes walk above the highest lift in Narvik. Reintind is a top located in Skjomen, south of town, not far away from Gagnesaksla, while Raankjeipen is 25 minutes south of town following E6. Storsteinstoppen with it´s about 1900 meters is one of the highest mountain in the area, and it is also located in Skjomen. You´ll probably need a couple of days to get there, but it´s worth it!

Scandinavian Freeskiing Championships - Riksgränsen 2000
Some pictures taken in the beginning of june 2000 at the Scandinavian Freeskiing Championships in Riksgränsen, Sweden. We brought our own cameras, so don´t expect pro quality!!
Linken spent the 25.2.99 in the slopes in Kongsberg. They had a nice big jump, so most of the time we were occupied airwalking!Kongsberg - of reknown for its long and active skiing tradition - with a stable, continental climate, is a focal point between hills and mountains. Kongsberg has a fine skiing centre just next to the centre of the town. There you will find several skiing slopes, also a special one for children. The skiing centre includes a modern chairlift, excellent opportunities for slalom, telemark, monoski, halfpipe and snowboards, as well as a fine sledging run.
Linken visited Wyllerløypa 24.2.99 and this slope is a pearl located 15 minutes from downtown Oslo. Its a fun slope, steep and very enjoyable. When we visited its was very hard and icy, thus we got a good chance to test linkens carving abilities!
Linken tele team visited Kvitfjell 22.2.99 and had fabulous conditions. Kvitfjell - White Mountain - offers snow adventures for everyone, novices and elite skiers alike. 30 miles of slopes, 7 ski lifts, a moguls slope, 1 half pipe, 3 big jumps, 3 quarter-pipes and boarder cross for snowborders, off-piste skiing for powder enthusiasts.
Linken tele team visited Oppdal 21.2.99, and skiing was very good.
Oppdal is located 120 km (75 miles) from Trondheim, the nearest international airport. One of Norway´s largest ski centres, site of World Cup Slaloms in ´84, ´88, ´91 and ´93. Skiing in four separate ski areas, 11 KM floodlit. Facilities include swimming pools, sports hall, snowmobiling, sleigh rides and a 400m ice rink.
Linken tele team visited Trysil 20.2.99 for testing of prototypes. Trysil boasts a world-class 24 lifts serving 62 slopes over three sides of the mountain, with forest areas and high mountains. You can choose off piste, moguls or well groomed slopes and waiting in line is rare in Trysil thanks to a big lift capacity of 26.000 pers/hour. The 685m vertical drop and 70km of green, blue, red and black slopes gives opportunities of choice for everybody, from beginners to experts.
Trysil is known for stable snow conditions. Artificial snowmaking on six slopes, one children´s area and the terrain park assures an early season start and reliable skiing conditions through the winter.
Linken tele team visited Norefjell 28.2.99 and spent the day testing bindings in nice weather and good slopes.
On Norefjell you will find 24 kilometers of trails. The vertical rise is 1010 meters. There are good possibilities for offpiste skiing in a somewhat demanding and varied forest terrain. Additionally, separate area for children with it´s own lift, and snowboard area.
Norefjell has advanced snowmaking installations that will provide more than 9 km of the most popular trails open. The snow-cannons draw water directly from the lake Krøderen, and the pump-capacity is as much as 6.000 litres per minute.
The lift capacity is almost 14.000 people per hour.
All these pictures are taken in April 2000 during hard core testing of Linken´s new prototype in Lofoten. Test skiers as usual -Ronny Dahl and Terje Nordgård Larsen. The pictures was shoot at 3 different locations; Presten close to Henningsvær, Ørsnes at Austvågøy and Store Molla Island.
Lofoten speaks for itself, more exotic teleskiing is hard to find. But be prepared to work for it..............
Riksgrensen is frequently visited by Linken for testing of new equipment. Riksgrensen borders Norway, and actually means the Nation´s Border. Its only 45 KM from Narvik. It is deeply anchored in the Polar Lapland 340 miles north of the Arctic Circle. You may expect it to be freezingly cold, but strangely it is not. It enjoys the warm climate brought by the Gulf Stream that sweeps along the Norwegian coastline. The ski season runs from mid February till end of June. In May and June the runs are open, not only during the day, but also at night. You can ski in the light of the Midnight Sun, then be in your swimming outfit by noon. Riksgrensen is set in mile after mile of razor edged mountain peaks, long narrow fjords and deep valleys. If your love is downhill skiing there are long, sweeping slopes as smooth as velvet. And the off-piste skiing is unsurpassed. Riksgrensen is a Mecca for freestyle, snowboarding and telemark enthusiasts.
Linken telemark team visisted Hemsedal 27.2.99 for testing of prototypes. Weather was bad - but skiing was good. Hemsedal has the highest located skilift in Scandinavia, 1500 meters above sea level. The location high up in the Norwegian mountains is the reason why they have such a long season, from November to early May. Hemsedal has an excellent snow record. Ski area of international standard. As an arena for World Cup competitions, Hemsedal has 810 meters vertical drop, a great variety of slopes, a large snowboard park, mogul runs and excellent off piste possibilities as well as areas for children and beginners.
Linken telemark team visited Geilo 26.2.99 for testing of prototypes. Following you can see some photos taken during that day. We enjoyed the skiing in Geilo.
Geilo has long traditions for winter sports and has gained a reputation for being a very good cross country and alpine skiing area. In addition few ski resorts can offer such a wide range of accommodation, such a variety of activities and excellent shopping facilities as those you will find in Geilo´s compact centre. During the past century tourism has grown to be an integrated part of Geilo´s daily life.
Linkens home town and definitly the best skiing area in Scandinavia! We can´t think of a better place for development of alpine equipment. Take a look at the pictures, and you´ll get the idea! Another thing about Narvik is the magnitude of good tele skiers, so many people have picked up tele skiing over the last years and Linken use as many as possible for extensive testing.
On Fagernesfjellet, 5 ski lifts take you up to heights of 1003 metres above sea level.
From the top, you can follow precipitous slopes almost down to the waters edge.
Over recent years, Narvik has become increasingly popular with Telemark skiers from all over the world.
