Ronny´s Corner
|
 | | Me and Terje N. Larsen in Lofoten Photo: Arild Tønnes © |
Welcome to my little corner. This corner will consist of a little information about myself and why I´m still useing Linken. I will also try to fill this page with stuff about my sponsors, different skiresorts, trips, competitions and other things that interest me.
Some words about myself: My name is Ronny Dahl, born 09.03.75. I have just completed my MSc in Land Use Planning and Land Tenure at NLH(Agricultural University of Norway). I grew up in Narvik, and there I started skiing when I could hardly walk(It took a while). I consider myself a freerider who is also trying to learn some new school tricks. In 89/90 I started telemarking, and this is what I have been doing most of the time since then, but I go slalom and snowboarding whenever I feel like it. In the summer I like to take my dirt bike on a flight...

Heli-skiing in Abisko
|
 | | The lift is arriving... |
Me and the rest of the crew on Liten Plass went heli-skiing in the Abisko alps in Lappland last weekend (week 15).
The weather and snowconditions were perfect. The fall lines were even, about 35 degrees. They were dead straight, which gave a feeling of big runs. Abisko is about 1 hour from Narvik and has the higest mountains in Sweden near by (Kebnekaise). Anders Bergwall was the guide in charge of our heliskiing.
If you are concidering heli-skiing in Lappland or Greenland you can contact Artic Guides...

Loop
|
|
The new cinema movie Loop is featuring me and Terje Nordgård Larsen.
"Loop" is also featuring the great philosopher Arne Næss, the climber, base jumper and former boxing champion Kristen Reagan and Per Evensen.
The soundtrack is made by Thomas Dybdahl and others.
"Loop" is not a traditional extreme sport movie, but is more about the choices of life from a philisophical point of view. But you´ll definitely get some action as well, and skiing in Lofoten is one of the things to loook forward to.
The movie will be shown in Narvik in connection with the legendary telemark race, Rallarsvingen in the first weekend of Vinterfestuka.
It opens on Friday 05.03.03 in Narvik.

Why I choose Linken
|
 |
I have never been satisfied with the bindings you could find on the marked. They have either been falling apart or not been able to stay on my feet while skiing.
This is why I´ve always been looking for a new binding, one wich can live up to my demands. When I heard that Trond Olsen and Hans-Ola Pedersen were trying to create a new telemark-binding I became interested. It didn´t take long before we came in touch since they are located in Narvik where I´m from and where I´m doing most of my skiing.
Eventhough the first prototype had some weaknesses and falts, you could notice that this was something new which could lead to something good. From this time and on I have been skiing with Linken and tried to let them know about the things I thought needed improvement. Still I have to admit that I sometimes have been in the mountains really furious with broken testbindings, but I guess you just have to stick up with that for a while before you´re able to get a good result.
As time has passed by there have been noticable improvments, and I have become much more satisfied. I promise you that Linken now is a binding that can take a lot of agressive and rough skiing, belive me. The feeling of being in control when you´re skiing is great because the binding is direct and presice, and you don´t have to worry about the binding falling off while skiing.
The Linken binding is taking telemark skiing to a new level (higher, steeper and faster)

Mr. Rail 2003
|
|
See the movie from "Mr.Rail 2003" in Narvik. Mr.Rail 2003 is Robin Fagerli. The competition was arranged in Narvik (26.12.03).
|

|
Mister Rail contest 2001, Narvik
|
|
On the second day of Christmas (26.12.01), the young jibbers crew from Narvik held a big rail contest down town. The happening was a big success, and will be held next year too. Hopefully it will become a tradition in the little lost town, and we hope to get new great talented skiers like Terje Nordgård Larsen, Ronny Dahl, Robin Fagerli and Per Eirik Opshaug.
The training for the rail contest started at two o’clock. Nearly twenty of Narvik´s best skiers and snowboarders showed up to compete, some even drove the whole way from the little place Bjerkvik to fight for the “Mister Rail” title. After a quite slow Christmas, with a lot of drinking, almost everyone had a lot of energy, and where ready for some hard core railing. Except Torstein“relax”Gaard who is the master of relaxing, he can sleep for several days, and also this day he just wanted to get home to his bed. The Narvik crew qualifies him as the PRO-relaxer.
The start list for the Mr.Rail contest, 2001: Torstein“relax”Gaard, Ronny Dahl, Robin Fagerli, Terje N. Larsen, Øyvind Okshau, William Gaard, Pål”Kinakål” Markusen, Ronny”Tony Calzoni”Olsen, Mikael B. Olsen, Bjørnar”BB”Bogholm, Torgeir”Turkey”Nordkiel and Per Eirik Opshaug “P.E.O”(bad knee injury, can’t compete).
Other who chose to not compete because of cold weather (-12*C) and other bad excuses... Patrik”deta”Olsen, Vegard Storhomo and Thomas”snørrunge”Leirvik.
The contest started at 15.30 and lasted almost an hour. The competitors had two jumps each to impress the judges, but we decided that everyone should run in the Super Final, because of a good Christmas spirit. The judges who were Vegard Stormo, Julie Sandvik and P.E.O. looked for Best Style, Best Trick and Most Trendy Look. The rail was of course on fire during the whole contest. Already early this day Øyvind Okshau impressed everyone with his smooth style, and many cool tricks on the rail, and was absolutely one of the hottest riders (in his ass), and he also has the finest moustache in town.
The contest went on well and everyone went to the final round. To win the contest you now had to do something very special, because all the competitors were going mad and did everything with super smooth style. Øyvind Okshau was on hot and went switch inn and out of the rail with his new east-style headphones. Mikael Olsen went mad and railed his last run with a naked over body. “Tony Calzoni” finished his last run in the Christmas special fitted Armani suit. Robin Fagerli, the most baggy man ever in this contest looked really trendy, and got extra points for that. With his headphones he went in switch smoothly on the rail, wearing only a singled on his body (freezing, was his last comment!). Terje N. Larsen did a super smooth rail to fakie on his last jump, and was really satisfied with his finish. Ronny Dahl was coming down against the rail in an enormous speed wearing ONLY ONE SKI, he tried to stick the 5 meter long rail on one ski. Amazingly he did it too. The judges gave him standing applaud, while his competitors where super stocked. BB was the rider who had highest speed in to the rail, on his final run ha had almost 150 meters speed behind him, when he amazingly edged his board and fell right before the railing in-run. Bad for him!
The winner was going to be announced at the big party at Opshaugs later that evening. It was not an easy job the judges had in front of them selves. But they had a couple of favourites to choose between. The party started at eight o’clock, but the winner wouldn’t be announced before ten, just to be sure that everyone would get enough Bud. The judges had decided that the winner title stood between Robin Fagerli and Mr.”One Foot”Ronny Dahl. But since both of them had other plans and didn’t participated at the party, none of them were going to be the winner. The title was now between Øyvind Okshau and Terje N. Larsen. As in all other contests the judges chose the guy with a known name in the ski environment, so Terj became the Mister Rail 2001. Second place went to Mikael B. Olsen who is a snowboarder, he was surprised and stocked over his ranking. In third place came Tony Calzoni, his Armani suit gave him just enough points to be number three. BB´s crazy crash gave him a wildcard to the next years competition, just for the brave performance. In prize the competitors got the following: 1st place: Bottle of Champagne. 2nd place: Cebe Sun glasses 3rd place: Stickers.
Creds to all riders, and a big YOO! to he winners…
Published by the people in charge.

Tyin-Filefjell
|
 | | Hiking Photo:Gunnar Lien Holsten |
After Hemsedal Freeride 24/03/01, where I didn´t manage to stay on my skis, me, Petter Bolstad and Gunnar Lien Holsten went to Tyin to do a job for Filefjell-ski resort. They have big planes about making Tyin- Filefjell into one of the best ski resorts in Norway. We are helping them in their decision of where to build lifts, slopes, after ski etc. Hopefully our input will make it easier for them to build a ski resort were people want to go skiing. They have some great mountains there, which are perfect for skiing, hiking and cross-country, and in the summer its great for bicycling. If you like fishing they have a lot of lakes, and in the autumn you can go hunting. Today you can only find 2 lifts there, but if they start building the lifts they are planning to build, they will get one of the best resorts in Norway. We stayed there from 27/03/01 to 31/03/01 in a nice cabin.

Chamonix
|
 |
Here is a report from Chamonix. I started my trip to Chamonix on sat.03/02 and I will stay here until sat.03/03. I travelled by plane with Langley Travel from Oslo to Grenoble and by bus from Grenoble to Chamonix. When I arrived Chamonix my friends had already found a place to live. So me, Terje N. Larsen ,Vegard Stormo (snowboarder) and Christian Åslund (Swedish photographer
caslund.com) live in a flat in Chamonix Syd. Other people that have stayed with us are Ove Marius Stene (Snowboarder), Anders Waage Nilsen (Fri Flyt), Thomas Leirvik (Skier & Snowboarder), Magnus Ellegaard (Skier) and BB (Snowboarder). The flat we are renting is quite expensive so we try to have as much people as possible. More people = cheaper rent.
The mountains and the skiing her in Chamonix are enormous. To people who are planning a skiing trip or thinking about going her. I´ll just say: don´t hesitate, go to Chamonix. I can promise you that you will be impressed. But I think you ought to be an experienced skier when going to Chamonix. Most skiing is off pist; there are only a few places where you can have good skiing in the pist. The Avalanche danger and glacier cracks are things you have to watch for all the time. Especially when you´re skiing from Aiguille du Midi, Grand Montes and when you are hiking. You should always have your beeper on and carry a backpack with a shovel and sonde wherever you go. And you should bring some climbing equipment as well; climbing harness, 8, carbines, ice screws, climbing rope etc. It all depends on what kind of skiing your thinking about. You should always check out with a person who knows the places your thinking about skiing or you can rent a guide.
We have tried to go skiing everyday. Some of the places I have skied are Aiguille du Midi (3842 m), Les Grands Montets (3275 m), Le Tour, La Flegere (1894 m) and Le Brevent (2525 m). We have been skiing with a photographer almost everyday. The pictures that we have taken, I will show on this page as soon as they are available.

Salt Lake City, Utah
|
 | | Drinking beer in Park City |
Monday 22.01.01 the Linken bindings (Hans-Ola Pedersen & Børge Soleng) and I went to SLC to join the "Retailers on snow demo."
We spent the first two days skiing in Snowbird. The weather was nice and the hills were great, but there could have been some more snow. We received a lot of attention around the bindings and met a lot of friendly people.
After skiing for two days we went to Park City to join an " On snow demo." Here several different equipment suppliers held stands and lent out equipment for people to try it in the slopes. In Park City I also got to try the half-pipe made for the Olympics 2002. It was really great.
Saturday I participated a freeride competition (Telemark) in Brighton and got 6th place. Can´t say that I´m satisfied. But the most important thing to do during a freeride-competition is to stay on your skis. And I didn´t manage that. A lot of good teleskiers participated, so you have to ski 110% to do well. You also need the judges on your side and you can only manage that by skiing well. The different between the freeride-competition in Brighton and the ones in Scandinavia is that the skiing is more aggressive in Scandinavia.
See my run in Brighton...
We also met some Norwegians who were touring Canada and USA (Martin & Amund), and we went skiing with them for a couple of days.
Sunday we went to the equipment demo again, but this time it was located indoor down town SLC. Here more than 100 equipment suppliers were showing their equipment.
The last days in Utah we spent skiing in Snowbird and this time we had powder above our knees. Such weightless snow you find here, you never experience in Norway, so I´m really looking forward to go skiing in USA again.
See pictures from our trip to Salt Lake City…
